Single or Double Garage Doors?

  • Published on November 6, 2017

Building a new home or renovating an existing one? You may have picked out all the fixtures and fittings for the inside of your home, but have you decided on the outside? If you have a garage, then don’t think that all garage doors come as standard. There are many styles and sizes to choose from. The first thing you need to consider is if you want single doors or a double one. Both do the same thing – opening and closing, providing a safe closure for your car and belongings – but it is down to you to decide on what look you want for the front of your home while getting the functionality you need. Here is a guide to single and double garage doors to help you in your decision making.

Things to Consider

What are you using your garage for? Do you have one or two vehicles you want to park inside, and how big are these vehicles? A single garage door as standard measures 2100mm high x 2400mm wide while a double size is 2100mm high x 4800mm wide. These sizes are customisable if you prefer something else. The bigger it is, the greater the cost.

It is more important to think about the garage usage first and aesthetics secondary, but consider how you want the front of your home to look like. If you have space, do you like the look of two single doors, or would you rather have one big double door?

Single Garage Doors

Having two single garage doors may be beneficial to some. When you have two doors, it is more likely that your garage will stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter as you only open a smaller passageway to get in and out. A double garage door tends to let it all escape.

Another benefit to single garage doors is that if there was to be a malfunction on one, then you still have a way in and out through the other door.

The actual cost of two single doors isn’t too much less than a large double door. However. If they are automatic, two motors may end up a bit costlier. You will also need to have two identical openings for the doors along with a stable middle section.

Many people like the look of the single garage doors. They can also be turned into a carriage-style look, which is appealing.

Double Garage Doors

If you have two large vehicles, then double doors are the way to go. Manoeuvring through smaller single doors can be difficult. If you have three small cars that could fit in your garage, or even just two cars with bicycles, motorcycles, roof racks with sports equipment, then go for the double garage doors.

A double garage door is very noticeable and can really make a statement. That statement can be anything you want it to be thanks to customisable doors from Doors Direct!
