How to Make Your Garage Door More Secure

  • Published on February 25, 2020

Home security is important. You want to keep yourself, your family, and your belongings safe from prying hands and eyes. One point of entry that is often overlooked is the garage door. This post will go over various ways that you can help secure your garage to keep your property safe.

How Do Garage Types Compare: A Brief Overview

While there are ways you can help secure any garage door, there are some that come more protected than others. We will cover roller doors, panel lift/sectional doors, and tilt garage doors

Roller Doors

Roller Doors, especially automated roller doors are the most secure option for garage doors. There is no clear point of entry for a potential burglar. To make them more secure, install a double-skinned metal steadfast locking system and quality side rails. Adding strengthened top and bottom slate will also help prevent break-ins.

Panel Lift/Sectional Doors

While a panel lift/sectional door isn’t quite as secure as a roller door, they don’t give potential intruders an easy way to enter your garage. Fully sealed with a sturdy steel frame, these doors would be difficult to maneuver without the proper tools or a garage door opener.

Tilt Garage Doors

Of these three, the tilt garage door is the least secure (although you can install security measures to deter potential burglars). If you choose a tilt garage door, pick one that will have a euro cylinder anti-snap lock and a  multi-point locking system. These measures will keep the door secure even if someone were to try to drill the lock or force it open another way.

How Can You Make My Garage Door More Secure?

There are a few added security measures you can take to keep your garage door even more secure. Here are three:

Motorised Garage Door

One of the benefits of a motorised door means that there is no visible handle that a potential burglar can use to try to pry it open. Motorised doors are also nearly impossible to breach without the proper garage door opener.

If you want to be extra cautious, you can always unplug the motor when you are home for the day and replug it in the next day. As modern garage door openers usually have a scrambling method to make it impossible for thieves to “grab the code”, this is generally not necessary.

Home Security System

A home security system can go a long way to deter or frighten off the criminally minded. Knowing that your home is secure will make a burglar think twice before attempting a break-in. Use motion sensors and obvious systems that potentially can be seen from the street. Theives have trained themselves to spot these systems and will be less likely to break into your home.

Motion Detector Lights

Thieves usually prefer to work under darkness to avoid the risk of being seen or recognised. Installing motion detector lights around your garage door will help deter them from your home. Lights are a good way to alert you or your neighbours that someone is around your home, which could potentially result in the burglar being spotted. Most will move on in search of an easier target.

Motion detector lights are also occasionally connected to a home security camera, meaning the person may be caught on film. All in all, lights are a good way to keep your home and garage secure.

Garage Door Timer

If you frequently forget to close your garage door after using it, you may benefit from using a garage door timer. Install a garage door sensor and a timer. The sensor will be able to tell if your garage door is open or closed. It remains open for a set amount of time, the timer will automatically shut the door on its own, keeping your garage and your home safe.

How to Secure Your Garage Door While on Holiday

Many garage door openers have a setting that will disable garage remotes while you are on holiday and prevents it from being opened from the outside. If your automatic garage does not have this setting, you can also unplug it. Additionally, some garage doors have locks or deadbolts that will prevent it from opening it. These features will help you rest a little easier while you enjoy your time away from home.
